Food and Wine

The clock on the wall reads early evening; seven o'clock to be precise. You've just had your supper—medium-rare steak, mashed potatoes, and a mountain of vegetables—and before you take your usual spot on the couch, you're craving something tasty. Merlot, you think, would do perfectly. As you walk back into the kitchen you consider making some mulled wine with one of the spice bags that arrived in the mail the other day. Mulled wine is a long-time favorite of yours, when it's heated to just the right temperature, and it seems like the perfect time of day to make some. You stroll to the drawer with the spice packets in it, choose the perfect bag of spice, and pull your Merlot from the fridge. You pour your wine, water, brown sugar and spice packet into your crock pot and turn it on, leaving it so it can simmer. You know it needs to simmer for at least an hour, so it looks like you have some time to kill while you wait.

As the amazing aroma of mulled wine starts to fill the kitchen, you pause for a minute to consider what you should get your friend for her upcoming birthday. The now-rich aroma of the sweet and spicy mulled wine gives you an idea: a gift basket with an array of different wine-themed gifts in it. She would absolutely love that. You could include some spice packets and write out some directions so she could make her own mulled wine, and maybe a wine essence set. And what kind of wine basket would be complete without the wine itself? Her favorite is fruity but dry Pinot Grigio, has been for a while. You could include some of that. Come to think of it, it would be perfect to include all of the ingredients she would need to make the mulled wine, minus the water, of course. To complete the basket, you could throw in some spice mulling tea bags and top it off with a bow. Your gift will surely be a smash hit.
